5 Ways to Stay Motivated at Work During Challenging Times

The motivation of employees is a subject that requires further attention in the professional life especially during the pandemic. Within this scope, there are various methods which HR specialists and the statistics support that allows for employees to be happier and more efficient both socially and professionally. So, what are these professional methods that will increase employee motivation?

1) Being in Interaction with Other Employees

Isolation and individual work introduced to our lives with the pandemic is creating distinct effects on our professional life. In this sense, the importance of having face to face interaction for those who work remotely for a long period of time comes to the light. It is a known fact that work motivation can be increased through more interaction and more face-to-face working. The increment of dialogue, whether it is social or professional, is one of the methods that HR specialists recommend as a support that employees need. At this point it is found beneficial for professionals who work remotely most of the time to go to an uptake in their business model.

2) Remembering the Big Picture

In the fast tempo of professional life, for employees to remember the big picture while carrying out their Daily tasks and duties is quite important. Specialists emphasize that employees will remember the end goal and the importance of their responsibilities should they keep the “big picture” in mind while acquiring a goal-oriented perspective. Regular meetings, team events and one-on-one interviews can be beneficial in terms of motivating them and helping them remember the end goal and the value of what they are doing.

3) Acquiring New Skills

Another method that will help keep employees motivated in psychologically challenging times is for them to acquire new competencies and specializations called “soft skill” within the framework of their duties and responsibilities. According to research carried out in England during the isolation time when people had to stay home in order to protect oneself from the pandemic, 24% of the employees started to learn a new language and 19% focused on acquiring new skills in relation with software and digital literacy. Considering the fact that new information and skills reflect on the work quality and self-confidence, we can come to the conclusion that it is possible to turn crisis into opportunities.

4) Remembering the Importance of Mental Health

Balance of work and personal life can be an even more delicate subject in challenging and extraordinary times such as the pandemic. In this sense, the mental health of the employees can be very easily affected by stress. Taking time off or choosing reasonable rewards appropriate for themselves from the workplace (such as raises, bonuses, regulation of working hours etc.) are listed among the things that make a difference in achieving motivation for employees.

5) Dividing Tasks into Smaller Parts

One of the important perspectives that employees can adopt while working under stressful and extraordinary conditions is to remember that every task and duty can be divided into pieces. When we talk about daily responsibilities or stress stemming from a big project, planning the task by dividing tasks into stages and parts is one of the methods that increase the motivation of employees. Functioning just as equally both in individual and collective work, this method does not only provide better management of time and resources. At the same time, it helps carry out challenging tasks with more motivation.
